What Mark Will You Leave? |
|
In honour of Mother's Day this month we look at a group called 'Mothers Without Borders'.
'Mothers Without Borders' was founded by Kathy Headlee, mother of five children who adopted her youngest daughter from an orphanage in Romania in 1996.
Kathy has been involved with relief and community service work for more than fifteen years. Her work has included volunteer expeditions to orphanages and communities throughout the world.
'Mothers Without Borders' was formed in response to the global orphan crisis. They serve children in orphanages in Romania, Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Nepal and Bolivia and those living in the streets in Africa and India, it is their goal to send a message of hope and offer real solutions to the serious problems these children face.

Working with local communities and non-governmental organizations to address the needs of our orphaned children, they help to support community-based initiatives and develop partnerships with local organizations to find long-term, sustainable solutions.

Surya Mudra |
|

Surya Mudra is known as the Seal of the Sun, Seal of Life. This mudra is formed by placing the tip of the ring finger on the tip of the thumb.
Practicing it gives revitalizing energy, nervous system strength, good health, and the power to win.
The quality of the ring finger is associated with the Sun or Uranus. The Sun represents energy, health, and sexuality. Uranus stands for nervous system strength, intuition and strength. |

We cannot control life's difficult moments but we can choose to make life less difficult. We cannot control the negative atmosphere of the world, but we can control the atmosphere of our minds. Too often we try to choose and control things we cannot. Too seldom we choose to control what we can -- our attitude.

A springtime hello!
When people find out that I teach Yoga, they often immediately confess the reasons they don't practice. What I hear most often is, "I could never do yoga, I'm so inflexible. I can't even touch my toes." I actually love that people tell me this. It gives me a chance to explain that we're all built differently and most people aren't naturally flexible, but doing yoga can increase your flexibility almost immediately.
If you can commit to a couple of classes a week, your muscles will become longer and more supple. Our bodies were made to move, and your muscles crave it. Not only does yoga relax your mind and reduce stress, but the increased flexibility you'll feel can alleviate chronic pain and prevent injury.
It's like with any activity, whether it be playing an instrument or running a marathon. That amazing sense of pride and accomplishment you feel can only come when you see yourself improving. No one is instantly great, but as you practice, you'll get better and better.
In gratitude,

Book Review: 'Awake in This Life: A Guide for Those Climbing the Mountain of Spirit' by Michael McAlister |
"Is it possible to bring the peace of an enlightened perspective into the middle of our busy lives? Spiritual teacher and author Michael McAlister provides answers in his groundbreaking new book, Awake in This Life: A Guide for Those Climbing the Mountain of Spirit.
Written in clear, often humorous prose, Awake in This Life guides readers into leading more conscious lives and awakening to what is forever sacred and true in each of us. Less about a particular spiritual path than a comprehensive study of spirituality itself, the book demonstrates how to bring about profound realization into our day-to-day lives.
Drawing from the deep wells of eastern and western spiritual traditions, McAlister shows readers what to expect on the journey, how to maneuver around roadblocks, and finally how to integrate the teaching into a new and more sacred way of living." |

'Get Clear & Get Focused' a Meditation and Gong Class with Alison ~ Sunday May 25, 2008 |
|
It's normal to have negative thoughts but making decisions based on negative thought forms can take us down the wrong path.
If the neutral or meditative mind does not have the time to be neutral then we get caught up in frustrating and emotional energies that stop us from seeing past the emotion and confusion.
In order to become aware we need to be at a place of clarity where intuition, wisdom and love can grow.
The Gong has the power to clear negative energy and create opportunities for change, clarity and focus. During this class we will do a powerful meditation and then transform with the Gong.
Time: 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM
Cost: Class card or Drop-in Fee.
What to bring: Yoga mat, blanket/shawl, cushion and show up early!
Location: Rama Lotus Yoga Centre, 340 Gladstone Ave., Ottawa, ON, 613-234-7974

Soothing & Sacred Sounds by Devinder Kaur |
"Echo" is a beautiful combination of guided relaxation and meditations for peace of heart and mind. Devinder Kaur's soothing voice leads you into a seated posture or corpse pose relaxation with pranayam and a softly chanted Guru Ram Das mantra.
The accompanying instrumentation of harmonium, gong, and overtone vocals further guide you into a deep state of relaxation. The 3 Gong relaxation meditations are designed for peace of heart (heart chakra and mind (ajna and crown chakra) to bring relaxation and self-healing.
"Guru" expands the Guru Ram Das Mantra in the guided relaxation on "Echo" into a 62 minute 'vintage' version with additional vocal layers and soft wood flute.
A beautiful CD to easily chant along to and meditate with.
